Early Years

Welcome to Early Years!

To give each Reception aged child the best learning opportunities we cover all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum but extend learning opportunities into areas of the National Curriculum where appropriate.  This allows all children a vast number of learning opportunities and appropriate progression.

During the morning all pupils are exposed to phonics teaching, through structured Read Write Inc. lessons, and topic or PSED based circle times.  The afternoons start with a structured maths lesson where pupils explore a wide range of mathematical concepts.

The rest of the day is spent with pupils exploring all other areas of the curriculum, both inside and outside of the classroom, through child initiated learning. This involves activities and resources being specifically chosen by staff for pupils to explore enabling them to develop their own learning on a subject. Staff are always on hand to support and scaffold pupils learning through questioning.

ICT has a very strong role in teaching and learning and is used to benefit many learning opportunities throughout the curriculum. Our Early Years classes have interactive whiteboards which pupils are able to use during child initiated learning to explore a range of age appropriate games and resources. We also have the use of a fully equipped ICT suite with 6 computers for pupils to use as they wish and an interactive table.

We have two outdoor areas specifically designed and built for our Early Years classes, one of these is a covered area for use in all weathers. We use our outdoors areas daily to enhance learning within the curriculum.  From the summer term pupils have other break times on the main playground.
