Intent

At Lent Rise School our intent is to inspire our pupils to develop a positive attitude towards language learning, the ability to communicate with others in a different language, and an understanding of the similarities and differences between England and Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

At Lent Rise, we ensure our languages scheme of work meets all aspects of the national curriculum. The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Implementation

Our curriculum is planned to provide pupils with skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in Spanish, beginning with simple words and greetings in nursery, to writing accurate paragraphs in the target language by the end of Year 6. In addition to learning new vocabulary, children are taught Spanish phonics and grammar to aid their accuracy in all four areas, and children are taught through songs and games as well as more formal lessons.

Our current Spanish curriculum, delivered through Language Angels, is in its second iteration. There is currently some repetition of topics on the curriculum map, however the curriculum is changing each year for 4 years until the current Year 4 pupils (who were the first in KS2 to begin learning Spanish in Year 3 rather than French) are in Year 6. This will ensure that no year group is repeating the same topic, while all are learning the basics needed to make good progress. Where different year groups are covering the same topics, their attainment and progress will inevitably be different as the older children who have had more language-learning experience are able to apply their understanding of language to Spanish, as well as make links with their previous French learning.

Impact

The impact of this Spanish curriculum is that children at Lent Rise School will be able to communicate with others in a different language to their own, and in the second most widely-spoken language in the world. They will be well-equipped to speak, understand, read and write in the target language with accuracy and enjoyment, and will become better, more confident communicators in any language.

Pathway Subject Statement:

To inspire in our pupils a love of language learning, the ability to communicate with others in a different language, and an understanding of the similarities and differences between England and Spanish-speaking countries.
