Miss Whorton has been recognised as a Leading Science Teacher by the National Science Learning Network.
As the school’s Science Co-ordinator, Miss Whorton has improved science at the school for all pupils by inviting scientists into the school, the introduction of a science club, working with parents on a science curriculum evening and helping ensure her colleagues have excellent science knowledge.
Miss Whorton has participated in a yearlong Primary Science Specialist course run at the National Science Learning Centre, supported by a bursary from Project ENTHUSE. This course ensures teachers without a formal science background have the scientific understanding and curriculum knowledge to lead science teaching in their school.
Mrs Watson said; “I am delighted that Miss Whorton has achieved this award. As an understanding of science is of increasing importance, it’s vital to encourage children’s’ natural curiosity about the world and how it works."
Yvonne Baker, Director of the National Science Learning Centre said; “Miss Whorton has demonstrated how the best teachers are able to learn new skills and knowledge throughout their careers to ensure our young people get the best education possible. By working with colleagues she has helped spread good practice across a whole school and should be applauded for her hard work”
